Specialising in respiratory care and persistent vegetative state care
The Services page provides a detailed overview of our range of services, which includes professional respiratory care and care for patients in a persistent vegetative state. In the Philosophy and History section, we present our core values and the development of our company since 2006, with a clear focus on quality, humanity and professional competence.
Under Forms of Care, we provide information about our inpatient and outpatient care services, which are individually tailored to the needs of our patients. In addition, the ZBI Management page provides insight into the management level of the ZBI Group and shows how strategic commitment contributes to ensuring our high standards. Trust in our expertise and many years of experience in intensive care.
Our services
At ZBI, we provide intensive care for people outside of hospitals – with ventilatory care (goal: weaning from ventilation), long-term neurological rehabilitation (phase F/persistent vegetative state), specialised wound management and palliative care. Nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy work hand in hand on an interdisciplinary basis – in Berlin and Hamburg.
Our philosophy
Care with dignity, participation and safety: At ZBI, we combine a high level of professionalism (100% certified nursing care in central Berlin) with active family involvement and therapeutic services – from Snoezelen to therapy. Our goal is to provide supportive, person-centred intensive care.
ZBI Management
The ZBI Group is managed by Annett Zimpel and Judith Sittig. As a specialised, medium-sized care company, we network our locations in Berlin and Hamburg and are involved in initiatives such as BAG Phase F – for clear standards and seamless transitions.
Careers at ZBI
Working at ZBI means providing non-clinical intensive care in interdisciplinary teams, structured induction and continuous training – in Berlin-Lichtenberg and Hamburg. This creates an environment that combines professional care with genuine relief.
Professional intensive care since 2006
Our history
Since December 2006, the Centre for Ventilation and Intensive Care in Berlin’s Storkower Bogen district has been an integral part of the local care landscape. The centre was founded in response to a lack of specialist care services, which became apparent to the founders, Heike Dreier and Dr. Wolfgang Kalkhof, following a personal tragedy.
The two founders have played a key role in ensuring that, in addition to ZBI Berlin, a wide range of care services for people with respiratory problems and acquired brain damage can now be provided in other metropolitan regions of Germany with around 300 employees.
This step transformed the ‘Centre for Respiratory and Intensive Care’ into the ‘ZBI Group’.
Our 15-year company history can be read in detail in this article.
